Startup Options

Startup Options

Simple Accounting recognizes a number of options when starting which change the behavior of the program. These options are not saved and so must be entered each time you wish to use them (see below for an exception to this statement.) Also, they apply only to the current user–not to anyone else using the program at that time. Therefore, each user can start the program with his or her own options.

Startup Options are set with parameters. The syntax for these is as follows:

C:>SAFE /PARAMETER1-value/PARAMETER2-value

You enable these options in one of two ways:

1. By starting SAFE EE from a command prompt, as above.

2. By setting up ashortcut to SAFE EE in Windows which includes the options you wish on the Target tab. If you use this method, every time you start Simple Accounting with this short cut, the options you have entered will be enabled.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  • These parameters are not case sensitive. Upper or lower case is fine.

  • You can combine as many parameters as you like. If you do use more than one parameter, be certain that you do not leave spaces between each parameter/value.

PARAMETER PURPOSE

/PATH- The PATH statement for data files. This allows you to load the executable program in a local directory, while locating the data files elsewhere (a file server, perhaps) as described in the Alternate Workstation Installation Method section of Networking.

Example: To start Simple Accounting with user Employee ID JIM, (who has no personal password set) type:

 SAFE /PATH-OURSERVERSIMPLE <Enter>

This is not the same thing as the DOS PATH statement. The DOS PATH statement has no effect on the operation of Simple Accounting.

/USER- Enter the user’s Employee ID. This has the same effect as entering your employee ID with Require Employee Log On turned on in Setup Global Options. This employee ID must be present in the Employees main data file.

Example: To start Simple Accounting with user Employee ID JIM, type:

 SAFE /USER-JIM/PASSWORD-SIMPLE <Enter>

/PASSWORD- Start Simple Accounting with a user’s personal password. You can only use this option in conjunction with the USER option. If you use no password, but have used the /USER parameter, you must include this parameter as well.

Example: To start Simple Accounting with user Employee ID JIM, (who has no personal password set) type:

 SAFE /USER-JIM/PASSWORD- <Enter>

Unlike other command line parameters, this parameter is case-sensitive! (Just as when entering other passwords into the program.)

/LOCATIONID- Sets the Location ID for all transactions. for users in The United Kingdom.

This option only makes sense in conjunction with Remote Office Extensions. This should never be used in any other circumstances.

/UK Sets Simple Accounting for users in The United Kingdom. Specifically:

·   Uses the Windows selected formats for currency, dates and times

·   Eliminates the ‘State’ field.

·   Changes all references from ‘Zip Code’ to ‘Postal Code’

When you start Simple Accounting in International Mode, viewing Help|About will display the letters UK at top right. Move the mouse over these letters to play the tune ‘Britannia Rules The Waves’

Setting Date Formats

Although not set as a Simple Accounting Startup Option, this is a logical place to tell you that you can set the format of dates, both on screen and on reports in Simple Accounting using the Windows Control Panel.
