SAFE over Remote Desktop and Citrix

Expand your reach by running Simple Accounting from any internet compatible PC or tablet!

Simple Accounting for Forms Experts may be used by an unlimited number of users over a single server and a local area network (LAN).

  • How much does ThinSAFE cost?

$1,295 per licensed server. There is no limit on concurrent users connected to each licensed server.

  • Can I limit individual users to specific functions?

Absolutely! ThinSAFE is managed using the same Simple Accounting Security Extensions as in SAFE for Windows. SASE allows you to change which menus, icons, buttons and so forth are on screen for every user who logs in to SAFE whether over the Internet or in your office.

To demonstrate our point this, click here to view two versions of the same data entry screen for a sales order line item; the first a view for a user in your office, the second appropriate for a remote customer doing on-line ordering. Note the simplified look of the second example.

  • Can I use ThinSAFE in my office?

Yes! Since processing is done at the server, you can extend the life of older PCs by running ThinSAFE.

  • Why would I consider ThinSAFE over WebSAFE?

ThinSAFE will typically execute faster than any web application. Also, some users are not as productive with web applications. Finally, there are a few functions unavailable in WebSAFE.

  • What software do I need to run ThinSAFE?

In addition to SAFE and the ThinSAFE SAFEExtension, you’ll need either:

    1. Microsoft Terminal Services
    2. Citrix RDX Server
  • Can you recommend Terminal Services over Citrix?

ThinSAFE runs beautifully on either product. Your company may already have one of these products so the chose may already have been made. Beyond that, while there are some differences in operation (Microsoft seems easier to configure for printing and runs a bit faster, Citrix launches from a web browser app and has some advantages on older PCs) the choice often comes down to one of cost. Bear in mind that each of these solutions requires licensing based on the number of attached users. Our suggestion is to determine the number of PCs you will want to use with ThinSAFE and then consult us (and your IT provider) for options.

  • How do I know I am getting the right components for my server?

That’s what we’re here for! If your volume warrants an in-house server, the easiest solution is to purchase Microsoft’s Small Business Server® software bundle. This includes all the components required to run SAFE and WebSAFE plus Microsoft Exchange for e-mail and faxing and SQL Server for managing databases.

  • Where does the application run?

If you are using an in-house web server, WebSAFE lives on your server. You can also install WebSAFE on any Linux based web hosting service.

  • Where does the data reside?

If you are running WebSAFE on an in-house server, you’re using the same database as SAFE for Windows. This has the advantage of concurrency; any transaction entered in WebSAFE is instantly available in SAFE.

If you are running on an external web host and you are also using SAFE for Windows in your office, transactions are from WebSAFE are updated to SAFE for Windows according to a timer (typically in fifteen minute increments.)

  • What about security vulnerabilities?

Generally speaking, a remote client running ThinSAFE runs a very lower risk of ‘infecting’ your in-house network since SAFE is actually running on the server. Also, our SASE add-on program offers data encryption to prevent users from copying data to their local machines.

  • What is the recommended setup for remote hosting?

WebSAFE should run on any web hosting plan that supports MySQL5 and PHP5. However, we strongly recommend the use of a dedicated server plan and not a shared hosting plan. Although the feature set of shared hosts seems adequate there is a reason they tend to be so inexpensive—slow response! WebSAFE requires the bandwidth that usually is only available via dedicated server packages.

Why ThinSAFE?

  • Working from Home?

How many times have you or your sales people wanted to get some work done after hours or on the weekends. What about grabbing some last minute information to take to a client meeting at 6:00AM? If you ever wanted constant access to your orders and inventory, now you can have it with ThinSAFE!

  • Remote Offices?

Do you have remote offices for salespeople or franchisees? Are you (and they) tired of not being able to get reliable, up to the minute information on inventory, customer history and order status? ThinSAFE makes real-time management of all your locations a practical reality.

  • Real SAFE!

ThinSAFE lets users run SAFE from whereever they happen to be on their Windows PC.

  • Ultimate Performance

ThinSAFE provides the fastest execution speed of any remote access solution.

  • Real Time

Transactions and updates made in ThinSAFE are instantly available to all other SAFE users.

  • Single Management

Since a PC running ThinSAFE is running SAFE, management of various user options is done in exactly the same way as with users running SAFE within your office.

  • Secure

Security is managed just as in ‘ regular’ SAFE, using the included Simple Accounting Security Extension. Each user logs in with an Employee ID and a password which determines the menus and options she has access to. Data can be encrypted, and users can be limited to only data associated with their log-in ID (ie. a salesperson may only ‘see’ her orders, while a remote client may only ‘see’ his inventory). And, since users are working with the data on your server, all updates are in real time: no remote updates are required!
