Remote Office Aliasing

It is often useful for users at the main office to be able enter orders on behalf of the branch office; in other words, as if they were a user at the branch. This could be because the normal person at a branch office is on vacation for example. This practice is called aliasing in SAFE because a person at the main office is, so to speak, operating SAFE under an assumed name.

Aliasing is easy to set up in SAFE by creating a Windowsdrop-down-list on the desk top of the user you wish to allow to do this. Adding the LOCATIONID Startup Option is the key.

Procedure

1. Create a shortcut to SAFE, just as you would normally. Make sure it refers to the SAFE program on your server. Give the shortcut a name such as ‘SAFE Branch 2’ so that there is no confusion as to which shortcut is to be used.

2. Now right click on the shortcut you just created and click on Properties. In the Shortcut tab, type the following after SAFE.EXE (leave a space) LOCATIONID=xxx, where ‘xxx’ is the three digit identifier of the branch office you wish to alias.

Example: //Myserver/C Drive/SIMPLE/SAFE.EXE LOCATIONID=206

3. Click [OK] to save the shortcut.

…Now, whenever you start SAFE using this icon, you will be entering orders as if you were in the other branch; all such orders will transfer back to the branch.
